People data: Engagement Surveys and Attrition

In the current job market there is a shortage of talent which has gotten a lot of companies speaking about employee engagement to retain their current talent.  However, these companies may not even be measuring engagement.  This is another way that analytics enters into HR, the engagement survey.  Engagement surveys differ from company to company but it is a key way for HR and business leaders to get real data on engagement, perceived performance, and attempt to predict attrition.

Let’s talk about the attrition aspect.  If a firm notices they’ve had a lot of attrition in this market, their gut instinct may be to throw more money or bonuses at employees and managers to get them to stay.  However, by having an engagement survey that company will be able to see trends across teams and departments and perhaps see that the real problem is lack of training and development, or lack of communication on a team, or lack of leadership.  All of these issues won’t go away no matter how much money employees receive.  So by using people analytics through an engagement survey a company can A – save some money and B - find out what the real issues are and set out to solve them.
